Ford History

The history of Ford began with a car race. Henry Ford designed a 26-horsepower Sweepstakes that beat a more powerful car in a 10-lap race around a one-mile oval in Detroit in 1901. With that victory, Henry Ford established himself as a man who could design and build quality cars with efficient engines that were small but effective. Trading on this expertise, Ford Motor Company was incorporated in Detroit in 1903, producing its first car, the Model A. By the end of the year, the fledgling automaker was already turning a profit. The name Ford would soon become synonymous with Detroit.

Not willing to rest on success, Ford expanded to Canada in 1904 and Europe by 1908, the same year it introduced the Model T, the car that would dominate the first quarter-century. This simple but effective model was the first mass-produced car that was affordable for most Americans, achieving Henry Ford’s goal of making cars something for everyone. This was due in large part to the introduction of the integrated moving assembly line. Where other automakers still made all their cars by hand in a static process, Ford created teams of specialists who worked on specific parts of the car as it moved down a line. This reduced the time it took to assemble a Model T from 12.5 hours to 1.5 hours. It also reduced the cost, allowing Ford to continue to reduce the price of a Model T. By the time Ford ceased production of the Model T in 1927, it had sold over 15 million vehicles, making it one of the best-selling vehicles of all time. Moreover, the Model T is still one of the most famous cars ever built.

In 1917, Ford opened its River Rouge Complex, the largest integrated factory in the world. At the same time, it introduced its first pickup truck, the Model TT, built on a Model T frame with a reinforced chassis and rear axle. By 1928, Ford was building its next great car, the Model A, while using its industry dominance to acquire the luxury Lincoln brand in 1922 and start the mid-priced Mercury brand in 1938. With the outbreak of World War II, Ford ceased production of passenger cars until the end of the decade. However, when it came time to re-enter the civilian market, Ford hit the ground running, introducing such legendary models as the F-Series line of trucks in 1948, the Thunderbird in 1954, and the Mustang in 1964. The F-Series continues today with the F-150 and Super Duty pickup truck, as well as the Mustang, which is not just a great muscle car but also one of the coolest EVs on the road, the Mustang Mach-E.

Ford also continued to innovate for the benefit of its customers. Just as the assembly line significantly reduced the price of the Model T, Ford’s crash testing of its vehicles beginning in 1954 worked to make them increasingly safer over time. Keep in mind that this was almost 25 years before the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began requiring frontal crash tests for all passenger vehicles. Ford continued this dedication to passenger safety with the introduction of three-point, self-adjusting seat belts. Ford also established Ford Credit in 1959 to offer loans and leases to customers buying Ford vehicles. This made acquiring a new Ford vehicle easier and more affordable for many drivers.

Today, Ford builds many of the most popular vehicles on the road. The Ford Explorer SUV was launched in 1990, helping start a popular move towards the SUV class among drivers that has continued unabated. In 2020, the manufacturer brought back the Ford Bronco as a purpose-built off-road model. The company has also dedicated itself to a greener and cleaner future of EVs, with the Mustang Mach-E SUV model and the F-150 Lightning pickup truck leading the way. Both of these models give you incredible fuel economy and unrivaled performance in an EV, while the Mustang Mach-E provides you with the luxury of an SUV and the F-150 Lightning capability of a pickup truck. With these and other models, it is clear that Ford’s legacy of automotive innovation remains strong.
