Mustang Mach-E Blazes Past Chevy’s Equinox EV
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a gorgeous piece of machinery: a sleek, compact SUV that lets you leave the gas pump behind with electrified performance that’s second to none. That being said, it’s not the only electric vehicle (EV) in its class out there, and the competition has been heating up lately with more and more models available from other brands. If you go looking for a Ford Mustang Mach-E for sale, then you might notice other competitors like the Chevy Equinox EV, which can seem pretty comparable at first glance. When you give them a second glance and a third, you’ll quickly realize that there’s a reason Ford added their EV SUV to the Mustang family: it delivers bold performance and raw power that leaves the Equinox EV—and many similar models—in its zero-emission dust.
More Options for More Power
Before we dig into the numbers when it comes to performance with these two EVs, we should take a moment to talk about your options overall with them. The 2024 Chevy Equinox EV is a fine SUV, but what we think holds it back is a lack of options in terms of performance. Chevy only has one battery pack available for this SUV, which is an 85 kWh battery; that’s not the end of the world, but it’s not as good as it could be. They allow for two motor configurations, either a single-motor front-wheel drive (FWD) option or a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup, which is good.
By comparison, Ford offers four different configurations for the battery and motor(s) on the 2024 Mustang Mach-E, which gives you a fantastic range of options. A standard 72 kWh battery is available with either a single motor for rear-wheel drive (RWD) or a pair of motors for AWD. As discussed further below, both configurations already surpass the two options available for the Equinox, and this is only the start.
If you’re looking for something with more power packed into it, giving it better range and enhanced performance, then Ford offers an available 91 kWh battery for the Mustang Mach-E. This battery is also available with RWD or AWD, so you don’t miss out on any options by choosing one battery or the other, and its increased output allows for a range that is better than what Chevy offers with its single available battery. We’re big fans of options since it gives you the freedom to choose the proper setup to meet your needs, which Ford delivers.
Let’s Look at Standard Performance
We looked at the number of options available to you and battery output, but how do those things translate into performance when you’re on the road? Let’s start with the standard options for these two vehicles that you’ll frequently see on the lots of Ford dealers; this seems fair to us since there’s only one battery available for the Equinox EV, even though it’s a bit more potent than the standard one in the Mustang Mach-E. If you’re worried this will leave Ford behind, then don’t be. Once we look at the numbers, it will quickly become clear which model comes out on top.
The 2024 Chevy Equinox EV, with its standard battery and a single motor for FWD performance, offers 213 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. That’s pretty fair for a compact SUV like this, but it’s a bit underwhelming for an EV model that can deliver a lot more. Looking at the dual-motor AWD option, those numbers go up to 288 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque, which is much better. Since EV performance tends to include instant torque, you want to see big numbers there to get a rewarding driving experience.
Now, the 2024 Mustang Mach-E, with its standard battery and a single motor, gives you 264 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque for RWD performance. That’s a pretty significant difference, which the base configuration on the Equinox EV doesn’t even come close to in terms of performance—even the AWD version of the Equinox’s battery barely offers more horsepower and still falls behind for torque. With the standard battery and a dual-motor AWD configuration, the Mustang Mach-E flies past the Chevy model with 325 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. At this point, the Equinox is in the dust, with nowhere near the level of power and performance that the Mustang Mach-E brings to the road, and all of that instant torque feels amazing when you’re driving.
Moving up From the Standard
Just looking at the standard options and comparing them makes it clear that Ford delivers a far more exhilarating driving experience with the Mustang Mach-E, but we’re not done. If you go for the available 91 kWh battery, then you get even greater power, and at a certain point, the comparisons start to feel unfair even though these two models are in the same class. We should also mention that if you go with a single-motor setup, the RWD performance of the Mustang Mach-E feels sportier and more potent than AWD with the Equinox EV.
If you go with the enhanced battery and a single motor, then the 2024 Mustang Mach-E provides you with 290 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque. That’s not a massive boost from the standard battery, but it’s enough to put this one at higher performance even than the Equinox EV with a pair of motors. With a dual-motor setup and this battery, you can enjoy 365 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, ensuring an amazing time on the road. What’s particularly noteworthy, however, is that you also get greater range from this battery than Chevy’s model; the Equinox EV with AWD gets an estimated 285 miles of range from a full charge, while an AWD Mustang Mach-E offers an estimated 300 miles of range.
Ford Goes Further and Can’t Be Beat
If the numbers haven’t made it clear how much more powerful the Mustang Mach-E is than Chevy’s Equinox EV, there’s one more important option to consider. If you go with Ford’s GT model and choose the Performance Upgrade, you will get an absolute beast of an EV ready to run laps on the track. This gives you a dual-motor AWD Mustang Mach-E that delivers 480 hp and an unbelievable 700 lb-ft of instant torque. What do those numbers translate into? You can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and drop jaws as you run a quarter-mile in less than 12 seconds.
The GT’s a monster built for the track, but if you’re the more adventurous and outdoorsy type, then there’s a Mustang Mach-E Rally model with the same performance along with a Rallycross-tuned MagneRide Damping system, RallySport drive mode, and more that lets you take electrified performance onto dirt roads and beyond. No matter what kind of driving experience gets you excited, Ford delivers with the Mustang Mach-E.
What Do You Look for in a Bold New EV?
We would never say the Chevy Equinox EV is a bad vehicle—it’s okay, just fine. However, “just fine” isn’t what we’re looking for in an innovative new EV. We want bold performance, gorgeous style, and a driving experience that leaves us with a smile and the desire to get back behind the wheel and onto the road the moment we get out of our SUV. That’s precisely what you find with the Mustang Mach-E, and Ford has made it clear that being responsible by switching to a zero-emission vehicle doesn’t mean settling for something that drives like any old SUV. If you demand more from your vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E was made for you; we’re ready at Pauli Ford to show you everything it can do. Contact us today to get started.
