The Ford Edge: Over A Decade And A Half of Greatness

Sometimes, a brand name can drive a vehicle forward, but that’s not the case with Ford’s vehicles. Instead, Ford’s vehicles – like the Ford Edge for sale here at Pauli Ford– live up to their reputation through proof and results rather than false promises. Ford is one of the most popular manufacturers on the market today, and you too can join an automotive army millions strong with the purchase of a vehicle like the Ford Edge.
To get to this point, this SUV has been through quite the ride in the decade and a half it’s been on the market, so today we want to take a stroll with you back through the Edge’s evolution from its first appearance in the North American market, to the model we have today. And we’ll also discuss what happens next to the beloved Edge name.
The Debut of the Ford Edge
When the first Ford Edge model was released in 2006, the industry was at a crossroads where more people were switching to SUVs, and the appeal of crossover vehicles was anything but waning. Ford, being no stranger to SUVs, released the Edge after crafting each painstaking detail to properly position the SUV to its target demographic, from a marketing perspective to how it handles real-world SUV tasks. The 2007 Ford Edge was released shortly after the Chevy Equinox, and these two SUVs were chief competitors in the mid-to-late 2000s. Both vehicles are still actively in production and are still considered competitors.
The 2007 Ford Edge brought with it a powerful 3.5L V6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. From the get-go, the Ford Edge was slated as a more versatile SUV, and this V6 engine played a significant role in that, with the 2007 model producing 265 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The Ford Edge was built with Ford drivers with families in mind. Hence, the Edge has a sizable area for sitting, and cargo space is also exceptional for its class. However, given the Edge is a more tech-focused SUV, even the oldest models were built with features that not every vehicle could implement in the late 2000s – like a DVD player explicitly built for rear-row passengers.
Even today, the 2007 Ford Edge holds up in performance and practicality. The V6 engine and the SUV’s cargo space and interior room still hold up by today’s standards. There’s a minimum of 32.1 cu.ft. of cargo space with the seats up, and 69.6 cu.ft. is the maximum cargo room. In the front row, the 2007 Ford Edge offers front-row passengers 40 inches of headroom, 40.7 inches of legroom, 58.9 inches of shoulder room, and 54.8 inches of hip room. Backseat passengers in the 2007 model get 39.3 inches of headroom and 39.6, 58.8, and 56.3 inches of leg, shoulder, and hip room, respectively. Sure, the 2007 Ford Edge may not have a modern-day infotainment center or safety suites like the Ford Co-Pilot360, but it remains a fantastic vehicle over 15 years later.

The Edge’s Continued Refinement
The 2015 Ford Edge was a momentous release for Ford because it changed the script in many ways to help usher in the second generation of what had proven to be quite the hot seller during the run of its first generation of releases. The Edge began picking up pace, and between 2010 and the release of the 2015 Edge, Ford managed to ship out well over 100,000 units each year. Today, well over a million Edge models are on the road, which is certainly growing. The Edge shipped over 100,000 units each consecutive year until 2021.
The 2015 Edge was a true leap over the preceding generation. With the 2015 Edge, you have three powertrain options to choose from, although it wasn’t the first Edge model to offer three – the 2012 model holds that title. However, the three powertrains available for the 2015 model are ultimately the better options. The turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine that comes standard with the 2015 model outputs 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, the 3.5L V6 engine creates 280 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque, and the turbocharged 2.7L V6 engine makes 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Ultimately, the 2015 Edge calls for far better performance than its predecessors, mainly thanks to that turbocharged 2.7L V6 engine.
The interior dimensions of the 2015 Edge are similar to its predecessors, but they’re not the same. With the second-generation Edge models came more cargo space, earning the 2015 Edge a maximum of 73.4 cu.ft. of space when the seats are folded, which is a decent jump over the first-generation models. Front headroom is similar to those models, with the 2015 Edge having 40.2 inches of front row headroom and 42.6 inches of front legroom. The back row seats do slightly better with the refinements brought with the second-generation models, with 40.3 inches of headroom, 40.6 inches of legroom, 60.5 inches of shoulder room, and 57.5 inches of hip room.
Although features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto weren’t available at the launch of the second-generation Edge models, the 2016 models received support via a post-launch update applied directly to the SYNC 3 infotainment center, which was an option starting with the 2016 model year. 2017 models would have these features set as the standard by default. The SYNC 3 infotainment center remained optional until the 2019 Ford Edge was released so that every trim level could use the touch screen and the available features, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
A Look at the 2024 Ford Edge
Today, we have the 2024 Ford Edge, released in 2023, which marks over 16 years of active production for this SUV. Within those 16 years, much has been done to make the Edge a cultural staple of the late 2000s and 2010s. The 2024 Ford Edge is a fantastic SUV with its turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine creating 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, with an available twin-turbocharged 2.7L V6 engine returning for those that want to push the Edge to the most power Ford has ever given it: 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.
Like the previous models, the 2024 Edge also has a maximum of 73.4 cu.ft. of cargo space with the seats folded down and is only reduced to 39.2 cu.ft. when the seats aren’t folded. Although the 2024 Edge isn’t a tremendous leap over its more recent predecessors, it serves its purpose for those who want a brand-new model designed on a formula that has worked for years. Additionally, the 2024 model uses the 12-inch infotainment center first seen on the 2021 model. However, if you want to purchase a new Ford Edge, you may want to act fast, and that’s what we’ll talk about right now to wrap up our discussion.

What’s Next for the Ford Edge?
Unfortunately, the automotive world moves faster than our world does. This means vehicles that have been generational icons and sometimes fan favorites are shelved until further notice. The truth is there won’t be a 2025 Ford Edge in America, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give up hope of a potential revival in the future. In the past, iconic models like the Bronco have been resurrected by Ford, so who is to say this decision is definitive? What’s important now is that the final model year of the Edge is here and ready to be experienced up close and personal. Come in today, and we’ll show you everything this unique SUV has to offer!
